The Hanging Man

with 4 comments

By the roots of my hair some god got hold of me.
I sizzled in his blue volts like a desert prophet.

The nights snapped out of sight like a lizard’s eyelid:
A world of bald white days in a shadeless socket.

A vulturous boredom pinned me in this tree.
If he were I, he would do what I did.

The poem is written by Sylvia Plath who committed suicide in 1963. She was awarded with the Pulitzer prize after her death.

For those who get the meaning of the poem, you may also be interested in the cases surrounding Ernest Hemingway’s suicide in 1961.

What is life?

“Life is what you have before you commit suicide.”
– A sage

Life is hard. I think you already knew that. Coz that’s the way everybody’s life is. Each and every day is another hurdle you have to conquer. That’s not easy.
So why not put an end to this life? Won’t that solve all the problems? Actually no. Suicide isn’t easy as you think. You have your family members and even friends who will miss you if you die. You just can’t forget them and say bye to the life.
So the moral is that you have to cope up with everything and go on with the life. Despite all its troubles. When I go through such pains I remember the old adage that every dog has his day.
Wait.. what? Did I just call myself a dog?

Did Steve Jobs commit suicide?

with 6 comments

Apparently not. He died by a natural cause related to the illness he’d been suffering. But what if he really did commit suicide?
That’s a dumb question. Coz Jobs was actually against suicide. If he wanted to, he’d have committed suicide long ago, when he was diagnosed with the terminal illness. But he didn’t. He wanted to live and continue the legacy he carried on. Which he did. The world got at least half-a-dozen innovations because Jobs chose to live.
He also addressed the sensitive issue of Foxconn suicides last year and made sure everyone took relevant measures to prevent the tragedy from continuing.
The moral? Suicide is stupid if you’re a well-known public figure. It’s only for losers who have nothing to offer to this world.
RIP Steve Jobs.

Suicide of bankrupt farmers

with 2 comments

Increasing number of incidents has been reported in the Telangana region in India of farmers committing suicide due to bad harvests. Huge debts lead these farmers into bankruptcy. Bankruptcy is one of the best moments you’re presented with the option of committing suicide. You have no more money to survive, you’re better as dead.
However for the families of those farmers, the future is grim. Collective suicide by all the family members is something not practised in these times. This results in families with one or two members missing. Not that preventing the suicide would have made the situations better.
The best solution will be to provide those families with huge relief packages. This is not the perfect solution but is better than continuing to live and making matters worse. The potential of properly planned suicide to better living conditions should never be underrated.

And we live on

with 9 comments

Yes, yes, suicide is bad. It’s the most horrible thing on earth after Hitler. You know what’s not horrible? I don’t know either.
What’s good about this life? What’s not horrible about it? Oh, this routine, pretentious world. You folks never get enough of it, do you? All the injustice, wickedness, and stupidity in this world, but you still love it, don’t you? You still live on. And while all the spiteful people conspire around you and all the nincompoops act out their tomfoolery everywhere, you still live on. While you’re refused of love by the very ones you want to be with, you live on.
Coz suicide is the one thing too taboo even to talk about, you live on.

On suicide

with 21 comments

suicide slit wristSuicide is one of the noblest ways to put an end to your life. Some people tend to label suicide as cowardice, but they themselves are the real cowards. It is not very easy to make the mind to attempt suicide, even more difficult is the act itself. It takes a real person to successfully carry out suicide. That however varies with the adopted method.

It should be stressed that most people who commit or try to commit suicide really don’t want to kill themselves. All they need is some love, affection or understanding. Suicide comes as the only option when the world doesn’t understand this. Some people don’t really understand how difficult it is to live with extreme emotional pain. The standard way of dealing with such a person is giving the ECT treatment, but it isn’t as effective as people think. No medical procedure has yet been invented to cure severe depression. ECT can however divert the thoughts of suicide and minimize the suicide risk. But actually it’s missing the point: it doesn’t really give what the person wants.

Just my two cents.
